India and Japan to Launch Joint AI Cooperation Plan
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi are set to launch a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) cooperation plan during the India-Japan Summit. The initiative aims to strengthen bilateral ties in cutting-edge technology and counter economic coercion in the region, according to officials familiar with the preparations.
Expanding Cooperation Across Strategic Sectors
The two leaders will discuss ways to expand India-Japan cooperation in semiconductors, critical minerals, information and communication technology (ICT), clean energy, and medical goods. These sectors are seen as vital for supply chain resilience and technological sovereignty. The AI plan is expected to include joint research, data-sharing frameworks, and capacity-building programs.
Pushback Against Economic Coercion
The summit will also address concerns over economic coercion, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. Both countries have faced pressure from dominant economies using trade and technology as leverage. A joint statement is expected to reaffirm their commitment to a free, open, and rules-based order.
Strategic Significance
Analysts view this summit as a milestone in India-Japan relations, reflecting a shared vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific. The cooperation on AI and critical technologies is likely to enhance bilateral trade and investment, with potential spin-offs for startups and research institutions in both countries.
