In a significant move to bolster India's position in the global artificial intelligence landscape, homegrown startup Sarvam has officially launched a foundational large language model (LLM) boasting 105 billion parameters. This ambitious release is accompanied by a comprehensive suite of tools tailored for commercial applications, marking a pivotal step in the nation's AI journey.

Domestic Development and Strategic Differentiation

Co-founder Vivek Raghavan, in an exclusive interview, highlighted the model's unique attributes. "This is the largest AI model trained entirely from scratch within India, with zero reliance on external data and a robust foundation in Indian knowledge," he stated. While acknowledging that global giants like Gemini or ChatGPT operate at a much larger scale, Raghavan emphasized that Sarvam's model offers superior efficiency and cost-effectiveness. "For most real-world and agentic use cases, models of this size deliver excellent results without the need for extreme scale," he explained, positioning it as a competitive solution in the frontier category.

Superiority in Indic Languages and Low-Resource Contexts

The startup has placed a strong emphasis on Indic languages, setting itself apart from international labs. "Among models of comparable size, we are superior in Indian languages," Raghavan asserted. He noted that while direct comparisons with vastly larger systems are unfair, Sarvam's model excels within its size class, particularly in speech recognition and synthesis across diverse Indian dialects. "We believe Indians will experience AI primarily through voice, and in this domain, we are confident we are the best in the world," he added. The company also released a vision model that outperforms larger systems in extracting Indic scripts from documents and images, showcasing its niche strengths.

Performance Benchmarks and Global Ambitions

Raghavan provided concrete examples of the model's capabilities, noting that it outperformed a DeepSeek model from last year and compared favorably with a version six times larger. "Our goal is to lead globally within our size class, especially in Indian language and domain-specific contexts," he declared, underscoring Sarvam's aim to carve out a distinct space in the competitive AI market.

Infrastructure and Scalability Challenges

The model was trained entirely on domestic infrastructure under India's AI mission, utilizing concessional GPUs and maintaining data sovereignty. However, Raghavan addressed the challenge of making inference affordable at scale. "Training does not guarantee adoption," he cautioned, pointing out the structural difficulty of competing in pure B2C markets where global players offer free services after massive investments. Sarvam plans to enable access to its models while navigating these economic realities.

Expansion into AI-Powered Devices and Future Strategy

Looking beyond traditional platforms, Sarvam is exploring innovative interfaces. "AI will change interfaces," Raghavan predicted, outlining strategies that include smart glasses as business devices and feature phone integrations to promote digital inclusion. The company also aims to run smaller models directly on devices, enhancing accessibility and performance in diverse settings.
