Thinking Machines and Nvidia Announce Strategic AI Partnership
In a major development for the artificial intelligence sector, Thinking Machines, the high-profile AI startup founded by former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, has entered into a multi-year strategic partnership with tech giant Nvidia. The deal, which was announced by Murati on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), includes both a significant financial investment from Nvidia and a guaranteed supply of the world's most advanced computer chips.
Securing Cutting-Edge Hardware for AI Advancement
The agreement ensures that Thinking Machines will be among the first entities to receive Nvidia's next-generation "Vera Rubin" systems, with deployment targeted to commence early next year. This move positions the startup to leverage state-of-the-art technology in its pursuit of frontier AI model training and scalable, customizable AI platforms.
As part of the partnership, Thinking Machines has committed to procuring at least one gigawatt of computing power. To put this into perspective, one gigawatt is sufficient to power approximately 750,000 homes. According to industry experts cited by Reuters, a setup of this magnitude could entail costs around $50 billion, underscoring the scale of the investment.
Boosting Competitive Edge in the AI Landscape
This substantial injection of hardware is expected to provide Thinking Machines with the necessary "firepower" to compete effectively with established players in the AI field, such as Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. Notably, Nvidia was already an investor in Thinking Machines' $2 billion seed round last year, which valued the company at $12 billion, highlighting the deepening relationship between the two entities.
Statements from Leadership
Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of Nvidia, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "AI is the most powerful knowledge discovery instrument in human history. Thinking Machines has brought together a world-class team to advance the frontier of AI. We are thrilled to partner with Thinking Machines to realize their exciting vision for the future of AI."
Mira Murati, cofounder and CEO of Thinking Machines, emphasized the foundational role of Nvidia's technology, saying, "NVIDIA's technology is the foundation on which the entire field is built. This partnership accelerates our capacity to build AI that people can shape and make their own, as it shapes human potential in turn."
Shared Vision for Transformative Technology
The partnership also encompasses efforts to design training and serving systems tailored for Nvidia architectures, with the aim of broadening access to frontier AI and open models for enterprises, research institutions, and the scientific community. Both companies share a vision of building powerful AI systems that are understandable, customizable, and collaborative, requiring advances in research, design, and infrastructure at scale.
This collaboration is set to provide a robust foundation for ensuring that AI, as one of the most transformative technologies of our time, expands human capability and drives innovation across various sectors.
