Zohran Mamdani is launching a brand-new livestream show on Twitch called 'Talk with the People.' The inaugural stream is scheduled for May 21 at 4 PM ET. During the livestream, Mamdani will answer questions from viewers in real time while discussing city issues and daily life in New York City. The stream will also be simulcast on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, but Twitch will serve as the primary platform where audiences can interact with him directly.
Connecting with Younger Generations
Mamdani gained popularity online before becoming mayor by frequently using social media videos to engage with young people. Now, he aims to continue this approach while serving at City Hall. In a statement shared with Polygon, Mamdani expressed his desire to make younger generations feel more connected to their government. He noted that many young people spend considerable time online, so he wants to meet them where they already are rather than relying solely on traditional news outlets or television interviews.
Making Government Accessible
Mamdani described the new series as an effort to make the government feel more approachable and understandable. He called the stream the country's first recurring cross-platform livestream hosted by an elected official. According to him, the goal is to foster a direct conversation between the government and the people, particularly younger viewers who often feel marginalized in politics. The title 'Talk with the People' is inspired by former New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who hosted a radio show called 'Talk to the People' in the 1940s. La Guardia used radio, a cutting-edge medium at the time, to speak directly to citizens. Mamdani is now attempting a similar approach using livestreams and social media.
Growing Attention and Gaming Culture
Shortly after the announcement, Mamdani's official Twitch channel began gaining traction rapidly. Mamdani has also shown interest in online communities and gaming culture recently. He even congratulated a girls' elementary school team that won the 2026 Mayor's Cup Battle of the Boroughs Minecraft Tournament. With his new Twitch series about to commence, many are curious to see how a mayor will navigate life as a livestream streamer.
