Bengaluru Manager Loses Rs 1 Lakh in Netflix Scam

A store manager in Bengaluru lost Rs 1 lakh after falling victim to a cyber scam that promised a free Netflix subscription. The incident highlights the growing threat of cyber frauds targeting unsuspecting individuals through enticing offers.

How the Scam Unfolded

The victim, a 34-year-old store manager in Bengaluru, received a message on his smartphone claiming he had won a free one-year Netflix subscription. The message contained a link that appeared to be from Netflix. Believing it to be genuine, he clicked on the link and was directed to a webpage that mimicked the official Netflix login page.

He entered his credentials, including his Netflix password and, subsequently, his bank account details as prompted by the fraudulent page. Within minutes, Rs 1 lakh was debited from his account in multiple transactions. Realizing he had been duped, he immediately contacted his bank and filed a complaint with the cybercrime police.

Role of I4C in Combating Cybercrime

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), a central government agency under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is tasked with dealing with cybercrime in India. The I4C has been actively issuing alerts and advisories to warn citizens about such scams. In this case, the victim was unaware of the warnings and fell prey to the fraud.

Modus Operandi of Cyber Scammers

Cyber scammers often use phishing techniques to trick victims. They send messages with links to fake websites that look legitimate. Once the victim enters sensitive information, the scammers use it to access bank accounts or commit identity theft. Common lures include free subscriptions, lottery winnings, or cash prizes.

Preventive Measures

To avoid falling victim to such scams, the I4C recommends the following:

  • Never click on links from unknown or unsolicited messages.
  • Always verify the authenticity of offers by visiting the official website directly.
  • Do not share personal or financial information on unverified websites.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the cybercrime helpline at 1930 or on the website cybercrime.gov.in.

The Bengaluru police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. They have urged citizens to remain vigilant and not fall for such fraudulent schemes.
