A software engineer from Bengaluru has fallen victim to a sophisticated job scam, losing Rs 8.14 lakh to fraudsters who promised him a lucrative position in the Netherlands. The incident, reported to the Cyber Crime police, highlights the growing menace of online job frauds targeting tech professionals.
How the Scam Unfolded
The victim, a 32-year-old techie working for a private firm, came across a job advertisement on a professional networking platform in December 2024. The posting was for a senior software developer role at a reputed multinational company based in Amsterdam. Eager to explore international opportunities, he applied and was soon contacted by individuals posing as HR representatives.
The fraudsters conducted multiple rounds of interviews via video calls, which appeared legitimate. Impressed by his profile, they offered him the job and sent a fake offer letter with company logos and signatures. To proceed with the visa and travel arrangements, they demanded payment for visa fees, travel insurance, and flight tickets.
Payment Demands
Over the next few weeks, the victim transferred Rs 8.14 lakh in multiple installments to various bank accounts provided by the scammers. They assured him that the amount would be reimbursed upon his arrival in the Netherlands. However, when he tried to contact them for further updates, their phones were switched off, and emails bounced back.
Police Investigation
Realizing he had been cheated, the techie filed a complaint with the Cyber Crime police station in Bengaluru. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act. Officials are tracing the bank accounts and mobile numbers used by the fraudsters.
Police have urged job seekers to verify the authenticity of overseas job offers through official channels and to never pay money for visa or travel expenses. They advise checking the company's website directly and confirming with their embassy before making any payments.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with online job applications. As the digital economy grows, so do the tactics of cyber criminals. It is essential for professionals to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
