A Belagavi man fell victim to an elaborate cyber scam, losing Rs 7.9 lakh after being duped by a deepfake video of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The fraudsters used artificial intelligence to create a realistic video of the minister urging people to invest money in a fraudulent scheme.
How the Scam Unfolded
The victim, a resident of Belagavi, was initially contacted by fraudsters who shared a deepfake video of Nirmala Sitharaman. In the video, the Finance Minister appeared to be endorsing an investment opportunity, promising high returns. Believing the video to be genuine, the victim decided to invest a small amount initially.
After the initial investment, the scam application displayed a fake profit of $65,000, which convinced the victim to invest more. Over time, he transferred a total of Rs 7.9 lakh to the fraudsters, expecting substantial gains. However, when he tried to withdraw the profits, the application stopped responding, and the fraudsters disappeared.
Police Investigation and Warning
An officer investigating the case stated that the victim was lured by the deepfake video, which was highly convincing. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. They have warned the public to be cautious of such scams, especially those involving deepfake technology.
Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create realistic but fake videos, making it difficult for people to distinguish between real and manipulated content. The police advise verifying any investment opportunities through official channels and not trusting videos or messages that promise unrealistic returns.
Preventive Measures Against Deepfake Scams
- Always verify the source of any investment advice or scheme through official government websites or trusted financial advisors.
- Be wary of videos or audio messages that seem to feature high-profile figures endorsing investment plans, especially if they ask for money.
- Do not share personal or financial information with unknown individuals or unverified applications.
- Report any suspicious activity to the cyber crime helpline or local police immediately.
The incident highlights the growing threat of deepfake technology in cyber scams. As AI becomes more accessible, fraudsters are increasingly using it to create convincing fake content. Authorities urge the public to stay vigilant and adopt safe digital practices to avoid falling prey to such schemes.
