NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) of India reported that over 68 lakh malicious hits, originating from both domestic and international sources, targeted its online platforms—including the results portal—on counting day for the recently concluded assembly elections. Despite the scale of the attack, all such attempts were effectively neutralized through robust cybersecurity protocols, EC officials confirmed on Wednesday.
ECINET Platform Performance
The EC further elaborated that the ECINET platform, which integrates over 40 different EC applications and portals handling various election-related functions, experienced an average of 3 crore hits per minute on counting day (May 4). Additionally, the platform recorded a total of 98.3 crore hits across all poll days (April 9, 23, and 29). This surge in traffic underscores the platform's critical role in managing election operations.
Cyber Attack Mitigation
The malicious hits were identified and blocked in real-time, ensuring uninterrupted access to the results portal and other services. The EC’s cybersecurity framework, which includes advanced threat detection and response mechanisms, proved effective in safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.
ECINET Adoption and Growth
Since its official launch in January 2026, ECINET has witnessed a significant surge in usage, with over 10 crore downloads recorded to date. The platform was first deployed in its beta version during the Bihar elections in November 2025, where it successfully streamlined election-related activities. The integrated app has since become a cornerstone of the EC’s digital infrastructure, enabling efficient management of voter registration, polling station details, candidate information, and real-time results.
Conclusion
The EC’s ability to repel such a large-scale cyber attack highlights the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in safeguarding democratic processes. With ECINET’s continued adoption, the Commission is better equipped to handle future elections, ensuring transparency and security for millions of voters.
