Delhi court reserves verdict in Brij Bhushan case

A Delhi court on Tuesday reserved its verdict in the sexual harassment case lodged by six women wrestlers against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot set July 15 as the date for pronouncement of the order after hearing final arguments from both sides.

Case Background and Charges

The case stems from allegations of sexual harassment made by six women wrestlers in 2023. In May 2024, the court ordered the framing of a charge of criminal intimidation against Singh, while discharging him in a separate complaint filed by one of the six wrestlers. The wrestlers had accused Singh of inappropriate behavior during their training and competitions.

Legal Proceedings and Arguments

During the hearing, the prosecution argued that there was sufficient evidence to proceed with the charges. The defense, however, maintained that the allegations were baseless and politically motivated. The court reserved its verdict after both sides concluded their submissions.

According to the prosecution, the wrestlers had provided credible testimony and documentary evidence supporting their claims. The defense countered that the complainants had changed their statements over time, casting doubt on their credibility.

Impact on Wrestling Community

The case has had significant repercussions in Indian wrestling, leading to protests by top wrestlers including Olympic medalists. The WFI elections were also delayed amid the controversy. The verdict is expected to have a major impact on the governance of wrestling in India.
