Scammers Target Himachal Residents with Fake IPL Ticket Links
Fake IPL Ticket Scams Hit Himachal Residents

Scammers are targeting residents of Himachal Pradesh by sending fraudulent links that claim to offer tickets for Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. These deceptive messages, often circulated via social media platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, lure cricket fans with promises of easy ticket bookings.

Modus Operandi of the Scam

The fraudsters create fake websites or forms that closely mimic official IPL ticketing platforms. Unsuspecting users who click on these links are asked to enter personal details such as names, addresses, phone numbers, and bank account information. In some cases, they are also prompted to make a payment for the so-called tickets, which are never delivered.

Authorities Warn Residents

Himachal Pradesh Police have issued a warning, advising people to verify the authenticity of any ticket booking links before sharing sensitive data. "We have received several complaints from victims who lost money after falling for these fake links. We urge everyone to only use official IPL ticketing channels," said a senior police official.

The cybercrime cell is investigating the matter and has traced some of the fraudulent links to servers located outside India. Officials are working with internet service providers to block these malicious sites.

How to Stay Safe

  • Always verify the URL of the ticketing website. Official IPL ticket bookings are done through authorized partners like BookMyShow or the official IPL website.
  • Do not click on unsolicited links sent via messages or emails, even if they appear to come from known contacts.
  • Never share personal or financial information on unverified platforms.
  • Use strong, unique passwords for your online accounts and enable two-factor authentication where possible.
  • Report any suspicious links or messages to the local cybercrime helpline or the national cybercrime reporting portal.

Victims of such scams are advised to immediately contact their bank to freeze accounts and file a complaint with the police. The Himachal Pradesh Police have set up a dedicated helpline for cyber fraud complaints at 155260.

Similar Scams on the Rise

This is not the first time such scams have surfaced. During major sporting events, fraudsters often exploit the excitement of fans to perpetrate phishing attacks. In 2023, similar fake ticket scams were reported during the Cricket World Cup, targeting fans across multiple states.

Authorities emphasize that awareness is the best defense. "If an offer seems too good to be true, it probably is. Always double-check the source before making any online transaction," added the police official.

As the IPL season progresses, residents are urged to remain vigilant and spread the word to friends and family to prevent further losses.
