In a distressing incident from Kanpur's Kidwai Nagar area, an elderly woman fell victim to a sophisticated cyber fraud scheme, resulting in a staggering loss of Rs 21 lakh. The fraudster, cunningly impersonating the Police Commissioner of Mumbai, subjected the woman to what is known as a digital arrest for six consecutive days.
The Ordeal of Digital Imprisonment
The perpetrator falsely accused the woman of involvement in terrorist activities, using this fabricated claim to maintain psychological control. Throughout the six-day period, the fraudster issued severe threats, warning that she would be sent to jail and her house would be sealed if she did not comply with his demands. This relentless pressure culminated in the coerced transfer of Rs 21 lakh from the victim's account to the fraudster's account.
Victim's Background and Realization
The victim, identified as Snehlata, resides alone in a rented house in H Block, Kidwai Nagar. She had recently sold properties in Krishna Nagar and Vikas Sadan, Delhi, depositing the proceeds into her bank account, which unfortunately became the target of this scam. The ordeal only ended when Snehlata shared her harrowing experience with an acquaintance, who immediately recognized it as a fraud. This realization prompted her to file an official complaint with the local police.
Police Response and Investigation
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed that a case has been registered in connection with the incident. He assured that efforts will be made to recover the money with the help of the Cyber Cell, highlighting the ongoing investigation to track down the perpetrator and retrieve the stolen funds. This case underscores the growing menace of cyber crimes targeting vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly.
