Kolkata Police Issues Stern Warning on Bank Account Fraud Following Multiple Arrests
Kolkata Police has issued a critical public warning on Saturday, urging citizens to refrain from handing over their bank accounts to cyber fraudsters. This alert comes in the wake of the arrest of seven individuals from Kolkata over the past two months by police forces from other states, who were implicated in various cyber crimes.
Details of the Arrests and Fraudulent Activities
In all seven cases, the account owners were not directly involved in the fraudulent activities themselves. However, they were found to be receiving commissions for allowing cyber criminals to access and utilize their personal bank accounts. The suspects were apprehended in coordinated operations across multiple states, including Punjab, Maharashtra, and Delhi.
These individuals had rented out their bank accounts to scam networks for relatively small financial kickbacks, ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 per account. In police terminology, such accounts are commonly referred to as "mule accounts," which are used by criminals to launder money and execute fraudulent transactions while masking their identities.
Broader Implications and Public Safety Concerns
The warning from Kolkata Police highlights a growing trend in cyber crime where unsuspecting individuals are lured into compromising their financial security for quick monetary gains. This practice not only exposes the account holders to legal repercussions but also facilitates large-scale financial frauds affecting numerous victims nationwide.
Authorities emphasize that even indirect involvement, such as renting out bank accounts, can lead to severe penalties under cyber crime laws. The public is advised to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious requests to access their bank accounts to the police immediately.
This incident underscores the importance of cybersecurity awareness and the need for stringent measures to combat the escalating threat of online financial fraud in urban centers like Kolkata.
