Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) is experiencing a significant shortage of cabs from aggregator platforms Ola and Uber, as drivers increasingly avoid the airport kiosks due to low fares. While airport authorities initially attributed the scarcity to heavy rainfall and drivers' reluctance to navigate waterlogged roads, cab drivers have a different perspective: dwindling profits from the aggregator platforms are making airport trips unviable.
Drivers Cite Falling Earnings
Several cab drivers operating at KIA have voiced their concerns, stating that the fares offered by Ola and Uber for airport pickups have dropped substantially over the past year. After accounting for fuel costs, vehicle maintenance, and the commission charged by the aggregators, the net income per trip has fallen sharply. Many drivers now prefer to operate within the city or use other ride-hailing apps that offer better rates, leaving airport passengers waiting longer for rides.
Impact of Weather and Infrastructure
While the recent downpour has exacerbated the situation, drivers point out that the core issue is economic. Waterlogged roads near the airport add to travel time and fuel consumption, further reducing their profit margins. Some drivers have also complained about long waiting periods at the airport holding area, which cuts into their active earning hours.
Airport Authorities Respond
Airport officials have acknowledged the shortage and are in talks with Ola and Uber to revise fare structures and incentives for drivers. Measures such as dynamic pricing adjustments and reduced commission rates are being considered to attract more drivers to the airport. Meanwhile, passengers are advised to book cabs in advance or consider alternate transport options like buses and prepaid taxis.
The situation highlights the growing tension between aggregator platforms and their drivers, as low fares continue to push drivers away from lucrative routes like airport transfers. With Bengaluru's traffic and weather challenges, a sustainable solution is needed to ensure reliable cab availability at KIA.
