In a shocking incident of cyber fraud, a 50-year-old naturopathy expert from Nagpur's Besa Beltarodi area fell victim to a sophisticated scam, losing Rs 13 lakh to fraudsters who impersonated officers from the office of Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) chief. The scammers executed a well-planned digital arrest scheme, exploiting fears of terrorism to siphon funds from her accounts over a three-day period.
The Deceptive Call and Digital Arrest Threat
On March 22, the woman received a call from an unknown man who falsely claimed that her mobile phone number was associated with a Pakistan-linked terrorism outfit. The caller, posing as an ATS official, informed her that she had been digitally arrested and was under a 90-day remand in ATS custody. This alarming assertion created immediate panic and confusion, setting the stage for the financial exploitation that followed.
Escalation of Demands and Financial Drain
The next day, March 23, the fraudsters escalated their demands by asking for a Rs 100 test payment to a new phone number they provided. After she complied with this initial request, the scammers intensified their pressure, draining her accounts under the guise of investigation fees. By March 24, a total of Rs 13 lakh had been withdrawn from her accounts, as the fraudsters continued to press for more payments, leveraging the threat of legal action and prolonged detention.
Realization and Police Intervention
Realizing that something was amiss, the woman confided in a friend, who promptly advised her to seek help. The friend rushed with her to the local cyber police station, where she filed a detailed complaint. Following this, an FIR was registered at the cyber station, charging the unknown tricksters with cheating and fake impersonation. Authorities are now investigating the case to trace the perpetrators and recover the stolen funds.
