Nashik MP Raises Alarm Over Cybersecurity Threats in AI Surveillance for Kumbh Mela
In a significant intervention in the Lok Sabha last week, Nashik Lok Sabha MP Rajabhau Waje issued a stark warning about the potential serious cybersecurity threats associated with the advanced AI-based CCTV and traffic surveillance system being deployed in Nashik. This deployment is part of the security preparations for the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, a massive religious congregation expected to draw millions of pilgrims, saints, foreign dignitaries, and VIPs from around the globe.
State-of-the-Art System with Inherent Vulnerabilities
While acknowledging that the state-of-the-art surveillance infrastructure is designed to enhance security and manage the unprecedented crowds, MP Waje emphasized that any inherent cyber vulnerabilities could paradoxically transform it into a grave threat to national security. He detailed that the proposed system incorporates cutting-edge technologies including facial recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), AI-based analytics, and a centralized Command and Control Center. These components work in tandem to meticulously monitor the movements of pilgrims and residents throughout the city during the event.
"The visitors at the global-scale religious congregation like the Kumbh Mela are pilgrims, saints, foreign dignitaries and VIPs. Any unauthorised access or a cyberattack could just pose a grave risk of the sensitive information — such as real-time crowd movements, security deployments and VVIP routes — falling in the wrong hands," Waje stated emphatically in Parliament. He highlighted that the system's very sophistication, which makes it effective for security, also makes it a high-value target for malicious actors seeking to compromise sensitive operational data.
Call for Comprehensive Cybersecurity Audit and Safeguards
In response to these concerns, MP Waje has urgently called upon the government to implement robust protective measures. He proposed a comprehensive, national-level cybersecurity audit of the entire surveillance infrastructure. This audit should be conducted with thorough inspections through the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC), India's nodal agency for protecting critical information infrastructure.
Furthermore, Waje stressed the critical importance of data sovereignty and security. He advocated for ensuring that all data servers associated with the surveillance system are securely hosted exclusively within India's borders, preventing any potential foreign access or data breaches. "Establishment of a dedicated cyber-monitoring mechanism for the Kumbh Mela under the aegis of the Ministry of Home Affairs, will ensure safety of all," he asserted, suggesting a specialized oversight body to continuously monitor and defend the system against cyber threats throughout the event.
This warning comes at a crucial time as Nashik ramps up its preparations for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela, underscoring the growing intersection of advanced technology, large-scale public events, and national security imperatives. The MP's intervention highlights the need for balancing technological innovation with stringent cybersecurity protocols to protect both individual privacy and broader national interests.
