Pune Eatery Owner Defrauded in Cryptocurrency Investment Scam
In a distressing case of cyber fraud, a 32-year-old woman who owns an eatery in Wakad, Pune, was duped of Rs 4.14 lakh by criminals posing as cryptocurrency trading experts. The scam unfolded over September and October last year, with the perpetrators promising her substantial profits in exchange for investments.
How the Scam Operated
According to an officer from the Wakad police, the crooks initially contacted the victim in September 2023. They lured her with the assurance of an 80% profit within just one week if she invested in cryptocurrency through their platform. The fraudsters shared a link with the woman and instructed her to transfer money using it. Between September and October, she transferred a total of Rs 4.14 lakh to various bank accounts provided by the scammers.
Victim Realizes the Fraud
"When the woman asked for her money back, the crooks demanded an additional Rs 2 lakh transfer," the police officer explained. This demand raised suspicions, and the victim realized she was being deceived. She promptly filed a complaint application with the authorities.
Police Action and Case Registration
After conducting preliminary investigations, the Wakad police registered a formal case on Tuesday. The officer emphasized that such scams are becoming increasingly common, targeting individuals with promises of high returns in volatile markets like cryptocurrency. Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and verify investment opportunities thoroughly before committing funds.
Broader Implications and Warnings
This incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in India, particularly in the realm of digital investments. Police advise citizens to:
- Avoid sharing personal or financial information with unverified sources.
- Be skeptical of offers that guarantee unusually high profits in short periods.
- Report any suspicious activities to cybercrime cells immediately.
The case remains under investigation as police work to trace the perpetrators and recover the stolen funds.
