The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a free email update service directly through its new Aadhaar mobile application, eliminating the need for residents to visit an Aadhaar centre. The service, effective from July 1, will remain available for a period of six months, according to an official statement released on Friday.
Over 250,000 updates in two days
Within just two days of the facility going live, more than 250,000 individuals have updated their email addresses using the Aadhaar app. The UIDAI statement highlighted the rapid adoption, noting that the new mobile application has crossed 31 million (3.1 crore) downloads within five months of its launch.
Benefits of linking email with Aadhaar
Linking an email ID with Aadhaar enables real-time email notifications whenever an Aadhaar authentication request is executed. The UIDAI stated that this enhances transparency and provides an additional layer of security by allowing Aadhaar number holders to stay informed about any use of their Aadhaar for various purposes. The service is part of ongoing efforts to digitize and streamline identity management.
Other updates via Aadhaar app
To date, over 4 million people have updated their mobile numbers using the new Aadhaar app. Additionally, about one million individuals have used the app to update their address. The free email update facility is available exclusively through the Aadhaar app and does not require any visit to a physical centre.
How to update email ID
Residents can simply open the Aadhaar app, navigate to the update section, and follow the steps to add or modify their email ID. The process is designed to be user-friendly and quick, encouraging more people to keep their Aadhaar information current.
