Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that hyperscale data centre specialist AirTrunk plans to invest over Rs 3 lakh crore (USD 30 billion) in India by 2030 to develop 5 GW of data centre capacity. This investment aims to strengthen India's position as a global hub for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI), while generating employment opportunities, supporting local supply chains, and accelerating innovation-led growth.
Investment Details
Following a meeting with AirTrunk founder and CEO Robin Khuda, PM Modi stated on social media that this is among the largest proposed investments in India's digital infrastructure ecosystem. The Prime Minister highlighted that such investments will solidify India's role in the global digital economy.
AirTrunk's Global Strategy
AirTrunk, a hyperscale data centre specialist operating across the Asia-Pacific and Middle East (APME) region, is backed by Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB). The company's proposed investment programme would rank among the largest digital infrastructure initiatives currently under consideration in India.
Robin Khuda remarked that PM Modi's vision for India's digital economy has made the country a compelling destination for technology investment. He noted that India possesses the scale, talent, and ambition to become a global AI powerhouse, and AirTrunk is excited to support that vision.
Development Pipeline
AirTrunk's proposed development pipeline spans multiple states and union territories, supporting India's ambition to become a global destination for AI and cloud infrastructure investment. The company entered the Indian market in April through the acquisition of Lumina CloudInfra, which added 600 MW across Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad to its existing pipeline.
Company Background
Founded in 2015, AirTrunk established Australia's first and largest hyperscale data centres in 2017 and has since expanded rapidly across the APME region. The company develops and operates data centre campuses known for industry-leading reliability, technology innovation, and energy and water efficiency.
PM Modi concluded that the future of the world's digital economy is increasingly being shaped in India, and investments like AirTrunk's will drive significant economic activity, employment, and technology ecosystem growth.
