AMC to Install 7,000 New CCTV Cameras Across Ahmedabad for Enhanced Surveillance
AMC Plans 7,000 New CCTV Cameras Across Ahmedabad

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is embarking on a significant expansion of its surveillance network, planning to install nearly 7,000 new CCTV cameras across the city. This initiative includes placing cameras at 88 key entry and exit points to strengthen monitoring of traffic violations, overloading, and illegal activities. With this addition, the total number of CCTV cameras in Ahmedabad will exceed 13,000, according to AMC officials.

Existing Surveillance Infrastructure

Ahmedabad already boasts an extensive surveillance network. Approximately nine years ago, the AMC installed nearly 6,200 CCTV cameras at 130 junctions and public spaces, linking them to the Paldi command control centre. In the past two years, additional CCTV systems have been installed at over 70 flyovers and underpasses.

Expansion Plan Details

Under the expansion plan, CCTV cameras will be installed at city entry points in areas such as Sola, Chandkheda, Sabarmati, Bodakdev, Jodhpur, Sarkhej, Naroda, Sardarnagar, Ramol, Odhav, Vatva, and Vatva GIDC. These cameras will be connected to the command and control centre in Paldi.

Officials stated that the new surveillance system aims to improve automated enforcement and real-time monitoring of vehicles entering Ahmedabad. The cameras will utilize automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology to identify vehicles and generate e-memos for traffic violations.

Additional Capabilities

The surveillance system will also help authorities detect uncovered debris-carrying trucks, overloaded vehicles, vehicles carrying extended metallic elements, overheight vehicles, and unauthorized vehicle entry. Furthermore, the system is expected to aid in cattle detection on roads, a recurring cause of traffic disruption and accidents in several parts of the city.

“The purpose of installing CCTV cameras at entry points is to identify vehicle number plates entering the city and take action against traffic rule violations and overloaded vehicles through e-memos,” an AMC official said on condition of anonymity.

Implementation and Cost

The project is being implemented by the Smart City Ahmedabad Development Ltd. (SCADL), which has floated a tender for the expanded CCTV network at an estimated cost of over Rs 180 crore.

In addition to entry and exit points, the civic body plans to install CCTV cameras at more than 1,500 open plots reserved for public purposes across the city. These cameras are intended to curb illegal dumping of construction debris and prevent encroachments on public land.

The project will also cover the Sabarmati Riverfront, where 250 CCTV cameras are proposed, along with installations on 17 bridges, flyovers, and underpasses.

Safe and Secure Ahmedabad Phase 2

The expanded surveillance initiative falls under the Safe and Secure Ahmedabad (SASA) Phase 2 project. Initially, SCADL had floated a request for proposal (RFP) on November 27, 2025, for installation of 6,000 CCTV cameras at 88 junctions and 17 flyovers and underpasses. The scope of the project was later revised to include 88 city entry-exit points and 250 locations on the Sabarmati Riverfront, increasing the total number of cameras to around 7,000.

According to officials, the tender process is expected to be finalized by the end of May.
