Bengaluru's Silk Board Junction to Feature Elevated Walkway with First Metro Travelator
In a significant development for Bengaluru's urban infrastructure, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) has announced plans for an elevated walkway at Silk Board Junction. This structure will connect the Yellow and Blue Line Metro stations, aiming to enhance commuter convenience and reduce congestion in one of the city's busiest areas.
Key Features and Tender Details
On Sunday, BMRCL floated a tender for the civil and finishing works of the walkway, which is estimated to cost around Rs 59 crore. A standout feature of this project is the inclusion of a travelator—a slow-moving, conveyor-style pedestrian platform commonly seen at airports. This will be the first travelator within Bengaluru's Metro network, designed to transport people over short-to-medium distances efficiently.
The walkway is projected to be approximately 250 metres long. It will link the already operational Yellow Line station, which runs from Bommasandra to RV Road, with the upcoming Blue Line station on the Outer Ring Road. The contract encompasses civil, structural, and architectural finishing works to ensure the walkway is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Project Necessity and Timeline
Unlike other interchange stations in Bengaluru, such as Majestic, Rashtreeya Vidyalaya Road, and MG Road, Silk Board Junction will not have a direct transition between the Yellow and Blue Lines. This makes the elevated walkway essential for seamless connectivity. The Blue Line station is slated for completion in December 2026 and will further connect to Kempegowda International Airport by 2027, highlighting the walkway's strategic importance.
A BMRCL official provided insights into the current status: "Land acquisition for the project is ongoing. Once the bidding period concludes, it will take at least one or two months to select the eligible bidder. Only the tender has been floated; technical specifications are yet to be finalized." Interested parties have until May 5 to submit bids, with an earnest money deposit (EMD) of Rs 58 lakh required.
Expected Completion and Benefits
According to BMRCL, the works are expected to be completed within nine months from the contract award date. This timeline underscores the corporation's commitment to improving public transport infrastructure swiftly. The elevated walkway with a travelator is poised to offer numerous benefits:
- Enhanced Connectivity: Direct link between Yellow and Blue Line stations, facilitating easier transfers.
- Reduced Congestion: Alleviates pedestrian traffic at Silk Board Junction, a known bottleneck.
- Innovative Feature: Introduction of Bengaluru's first travelator in the Metro system, setting a precedent for future projects.
- Cost-Effective Solution: Estimated at Rs 59 crore, it represents a strategic investment in urban mobility.
This project aligns with broader efforts to modernize Bengaluru's transport network, making it more accessible and efficient for daily commuters. As the city continues to grow, such initiatives are crucial for managing urban sprawl and enhancing quality of life.
