Chennai Metro Phase-2 Receives Green Light for Partial Operations
The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) has granted official authorization for the opening of a significant 14.6-kilometer segment of Chennai Metro's Phase-2 project. This newly approved stretch runs from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani, marking a crucial step forward in the city's public transportation expansion. The clearance paves the way for passenger services to commence, albeit with several operational constraints designed to ensure safety during the initial rollout period.
Service Frequency and Speed Limitations Announced
Metro operations on this line will be implemented in a phased manner with distinct service patterns. During the opening phase, trains will operate at a frequency of every 15 minutes between Poonamallee Bypass and Porur Junction stations. However, service beyond Porur Junction to Vadapalani will be significantly more limited, with only one train running in each direction at 20-minute intervals due to current operational restrictions.
Furthermore, speed restrictions have been imposed on a specific section of the line. Trains operating between Porur Junction and Vadapalani will be capped at a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. This represents a notable reduction from the typical average speed of 35 kmph observed on other fully operational metro lines in the network, directly impacting travel times for commuters using this segment.
Travel Time and Infrastructure Requirements
Under these imposed restrictions, the complete end-to-end journey from Poonamallee Bypass to Vadapalani is projected to take approximately 35 minutes. This travel duration reflects the combined effects of the reduced speeds and the limited service frequency currently in place.
A critical infrastructure requirement must also be met for sustained operations. The double-decker section of the line remains contingent upon the completion of 26 deck slabs, with authorities anticipating this construction work to be finalized by March 25, 2026. Until this structural work is completed, operations may remain subject to further review and potential adjustments.
Stations Opening in Initial Phase
The launch will see a partial opening of stations along the corridor. Out of the total 17 elevated stations constructed on this 14.6-kilometer stretch, only 11 stations will become operational in this first phase. This includes 10 stations up to Porur Junction, with Vadapalani station being the eleventh and final station to open initially. The remaining six stations are expected to become operational in subsequent phases as infrastructure and safety checks are completed.
The phased opening approach allows Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to gradually integrate this new corridor into the existing network while maintaining rigorous safety standards. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, accounting for the longer wait times and reduced speeds during these initial operational weeks.
