The Delhi government is planning a major expansion of the capital's electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, aiming to increase the number of charging stations from nearly 9,000 to around 32,000 over the next four years.
Chief Minister Directs Comprehensive Roadmap
Chairing a high-level review meeting on the new EV Policy on Wednesday, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for expanding charging infrastructure. Officials have been asked to prioritise fast-charging technology, ensure uninterrupted power supply, and equip charging stations with basic commuter amenities such as seating and drinking water.
Focus on Fast Charging and Compatibility
The government plans to gradually replace existing slow chargers with fast-charging units while ensuring that all new stations are compatible with different categories of electric vehicles. This shift aims to reduce charging time and improve user convenience.
Multiple Locations Identified for Stations
To widen access to charging facilities, the government is exploring multiple locations, including Delhi Metro parking lots, municipal parking sites, vacant spaces beneath elevated Metro corridors, DDA markets, shopping malls, areas outside railway stations, government buildings, and major commercial centres.
Inter-Agency Coordination
The government is banking on inter-agency coordination to achieve the target. Officials said land and infrastructure available with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Delhi Development Authority, and original equipment manufacturers would be leveraged to expedite the rollout of charging stations.
Strengthening Power Infrastructure
Recognising that charging demand will rise sharply as EV adoption increases, the meeting also focused on strengthening supporting power infrastructure. Gupta reviewed power supply arrangements and directed officials to ensure that electricity availability keeps pace with the proposed expansion. She also emphasised the need to promote solar-powered charging stations to make the network cleaner and more sustainable.
Key Officials Attend Meeting
Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and senior officials from the Transport and Power Departments attended the meeting. The departments were directed to prepare detailed action plans and begin implementation in coordination with the agencies concerned.
The expansion of the charging network forms a key pillar of Delhi's EV Policy and is expected to play a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles while supporting the capital's long-term clean mobility goals.
