India to Power 75 Lakh Homes with Rooftop Solar by Dec

NEW DELHI: More than 75 lakh households will be powered by rooftop solar systems installed under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by December, Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced on Thursday.

"PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is transforming India's energy landscape at an unprecedented pace. In two years, the scheme has crossed the milestone of 40 lakh solar-powered households. With over 65 lakh applications already in the pipeline and a target of 75 lakh homes in the next seven months, the pace of adoption is truly unprecedented," Joshi said.

The scheme was launched in February 2024 with an outlay of Rs 75,021 crore to support rooftop solar installations and provide up to 300 units of free electricity every month to one crore households. While the central government provides a subsidy of up to Rs 78,000 on each installation, several states offer additional financial support.

To expand the scheme's reach and cover poor and middle-income households, the government has launched the utility-led aggregation implementation model, the minister added.

Joshi also held a meeting with officials to review progress in the installation of rooftop solar systems on government buildings. He said nearly 54,000 government buildings had been solarised so far, with a cumulative installed capacity of 855 MW, achieving 80% of the installation target.
