Kochi's Metro Connect Feeder Buses Serve 14 Lakh Passengers in First Year
Kochi Metro Rail Limited's feeder bus service, Metro Connect, has completed its first year of operations. The service provided last-mile connectivity to commuters of both Kochi Metro Rail and Water Metro. Around 14 lakh passengers availed the service during this period.
Electric Bus Network and Key Routes
The project involves an all-electric bus network. It was implemented in collaboration with the state government. Financial assistance came from the French agency AFD.
KMRL launched the service on January 15, 2025. It started with 15 electric buses, supported by seven charging stations and a dedicated depot. The service soon expanded to six major routes with minor trip deviations.
The fleet runs about 2,300 kilometers daily. It has clocked nearly 7 lakh kilometers in total so far.
Strong Performance on Key Corridors
The Aluva-Cial corridor has emerged as a standout performer. Routes connecting Medical College and Kadavanthra-Panampilly Nagar have also recorded strong ridership.
Loknath Behera, managing director of KMRL, commented on the service's success. He said the urban feeder bus service is a key pillar of Kochi Metro's integrated mobility vision.
"Its first-year success clearly demonstrates how well-planned electric feeder systems can strengthen last-mile connectivity," Behera stated. He added that it increases public transport usage and supports sustainable urban growth.
Importantly, the feeder service has also helped enhance the ridership and revenue of both Kochi Metro Rail and Water Metro services.
Data Analytics Drive Improvements
A major success factor has been the adoption of data analytics-driven optimization. Service and charging optimization initiatives resulted in a 15% improvement in both ridership and revenue.
KMRL established an advanced analytics platform. It integrates fare systems, bus telematics, and charging infrastructure. This platform continuously tracks key performance indicators.
This initiative was implemented under the Sustainable Mobility and Climate Action Programme. It received support from GIZ India and the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Focus on Safety and Future Plans
To further strengthen service quality and passenger safety, a behavioural change and road safety training programme is currently under way. This is in association with the SCMS Institute of Road Safety and Transportation.
Public feedback continues to play a central role in shaping the service. It particularly influences route extensions, timetable adjustments, and improved connectivity to underserved areas.
KMRL plans to introduce live GTFS-based vehicle tracking. This will enable commuters to track feeder buses in real time. It aims to reduce waiting times and improve reliability.
In-vehicle passenger information systems with live news updates are also planned for the future.
