Imagine leaving your home, opening a single application on your smartphone, and instantly knowing which bus to catch, which Metro train to board, how long the walk will be, and your precise arrival time—all without switching between multiple apps or guessing connections. This vision is becoming a reality in Nagpur with the development of the "Journey App," an innovative integrated mobility solution being jointly created by MahaMetro and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC).

App Development Nears Completion with Launch Expected Soon

Senior Metro officials have confirmed that approximately 80% of the app development work is already complete, with the platform anticipated to launch in the near future. The primary objective is to address the persistent last-mile connectivity problem that has long plagued public transport systems, transforming Nagpur's transportation network into one coordinated ecosystem rather than isolated, disconnected services.

"We want to make public transport function as a unified network where every component works together seamlessly," explained a senior MahaMetro official. "This app represents a significant step toward creating a more efficient and user-friendly commuting experience for all Nagpur residents."

Door-to-Door Travel Planning with Real-Time Route Mapping

The Journey App will provide commuters with comprehensive door-to-door travel planning capabilities. For instance, a person traveling from Mankapur to Mihan can:

  • Check the nearest bus stop or Metro station from their residence
  • View the exact walking distance to reach that transit point
  • See precise timings for buses and trains
  • Receive a mapped-out, most efficient route combining multiple transport modes

The application will intelligently combine different transportation elements—such as walking 200 meters to a bus stop, boarding a city bus to a Metro station, taking the Metro for the main journey segment, and then switching to another bus after alighting at Khapri—to create the optimal travel path.

Future Expansion Plans Include Feeder Services and Unified Ticketing

Officials emphasized that the Journey App will evolve significantly beyond its initial version. While the first iteration will primarily function as a guiding platform to help commuters plan their routes, future developments are already being explored to integrate feeder services like auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws, potentially creating a completely seamless end-to-end commuting experience.

"We aim to gradually widen the app's scope to ensure that every segment of a journey—including first-mile and last-mile connections—is digitally integrated within a single interface," added a senior official involved in the project.

Further upgrades are expected to focus on unified ticketing solutions. Currently, MahaMetro's Nagpur Metro app provides bus ticketing services, while the NMC-linked Chalo (Aapli Bus) app supports metro ticketing alongside bus ticket bookings. In the future, these services may be consolidated under the Journey platform, enabling commuters to not only receive route guidance similar to map-based navigation tools but also to book buses, metro services, and potentially auto-rickshaws through one integrated public transport system.

Officials clarified that these advanced features will not be part of the initial rollout but are under active consideration for subsequent updates and enhancements to the platform.

Addressing Accessibility Challenges to Boost Public Transport Ridership

While Nagpur's Metro network offers fast transit along its corridors, accessibility to and from stations has often limited ridership growth, as official records indicate. By digitally stitching together bus services and Metro routes, the new platform aims to create a seamless commuter experience that addresses these accessibility challenges directly.
