Pune Sees 24% Surge in Electric Two-Wheeler Registrations

Pune has witnessed a significant increase in the adoption of electric two-wheelers this year. According to data from the Vahan database, a total of 13,124 electric two-wheelers were registered in the city between January and May. This marks a 24 percent rise compared to the 10,853 registrations recorded during the same period in 2025.

Dealers Attribute Growth to Fuel Costs and Consumer Confidence

Automobile dealers in Pune attribute this surge to rising fuel prices and growing consumer trust in electric mobility. Nicky Sehgal, a dealer in Pune, stated that there has been nearly a 30 percent increase in enquiries for electric two-wheelers. He added that the electric two-wheelers they market on a retail basis are completely sold out. Sehgal also noted that the trend is not limited to two-wheelers but extends to passenger cars as well.

Electric two-wheeler registrations in the city have consistently exceeded the 3,000-unit mark per month since March. Another dealer remarked that this level of monthly sales is typically observed during the festive season. In comparison, the average monthly registrations earlier stood at around 2,100 units.

Similar Growth in Pimpri Chinchwad

In Pimpri Chinchwad, electric two-wheeler registrations also increased to 5,764 units between January and May, up from 5,166 units during the same period last year. Dealers attribute this revival to consumers becoming increasingly concerned about rising fuel prices and long queues at petrol pumps.

A dealer explained that most established brands have entered the electric two-wheeler market and stabilised their supply chains. This has given commuters greater confidence in the performance and after-sales service of electric vehicles. Additionally, higher driving ranges have made electric two-wheelers suitable for buyers in both urban and rural areas.

State-Level Trends and Government Targets

Sachin Mahajan, Maharashtra president of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), reported a 30 to 35 percent increase in enquiries for electric vehicles. He stated that the share of electric vehicles in total vehicle sales in Maharashtra has risen to 16 to 17 percent in 2026, compared to 7 to 8 percent in 2024. The government aims to achieve 30 percent electric vehicle penetration in the state by 2030. Mahajan noted that buyers in rural areas are becoming increasingly aware of the benefits of owning an electric vehicle, and these advantages are beginning to outweigh those offered by conventional fuel vehicles.

Across Maharashtra, approximately 1.1 lakh electric two-wheelers were registered between January and May this year, compared to 83,858 units during the corresponding period last year, according to the data.
