Uttar Pradesh Forges Major AI Partnership with AM Group for 1 GW Data Centre
In a significant move to bolster its technological landscape, the Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AM Group. This landmark agreement, signed on Friday, paves the way for the establishment of a one-gigawatt (GW) high-performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) data centre within the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region.
Massive Investment and Land Allocation for Cutting-Edge Facility
The ambitious project represents an estimated investment of USD 25 billion and will be developed across a sprawling 289 acres of land. YEIDA CEO Rakesh Kumar has issued a Letter of Intent (LoI) to AM Group representatives, allocating 114 acres in Sector 28 and 175 acres in Sector 8D for this purpose. This strategic allocation underscores the state's commitment to creating a robust digital infrastructure hub.
State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Sustainability Focus
The proposed data centre is designed to be a powerhouse of computational capability, equipped with nearly five lakh high-performance chipsets. Emphasizing environmental responsibility, the facility will operate entirely on carbon-free energy sources, including wind, solar, and pumped storage, ensuring round-the-clock sustainability. This green energy approach aligns with global best practices in reducing the carbon footprint of large-scale tech operations.
Phased Development and Operational Timeline
The project will be executed in multiple phases to ensure systematic growth and integration. The first phase is slated to become operational by 2028, with the company targeting full 1 GW capacity by 2030. This phased rollout allows for gradual scaling and adaptation to emerging technological needs.
Addressing Growing Demand and Fostering Innovation
According to state government officials, this hub is poised to meet the escalating demand for AI and high-performance computing from various sectors, including global hyperscalers, research institutions, enterprises, and sovereign AI initiatives. AMG AI Labs, under its "Democratisation of AI" vision, aims to build an integrated value chain that spans from energy generation to advanced AI applications. This initiative is expected to provide Indian developers with unprecedented access to cutting-edge chipsets, fostering innovation and technological self-reliance.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The establishment of this AI-focused computing hub is anticipated to generate thousands of high-skilled employment opportunities, significantly boosting the local and state economy. Additionally, it is likely to stimulate growth in ancillary sectors such as hardware manufacturing, software development, and specialized cooling technologies. Officials also project that the project will attract substantial foreign direct investment, further enhancing Uttar Pradesh's economic prospects.
This development marks a pivotal step in Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's vision of positioning Uttar Pradesh as a premier destination for AI and digital infrastructure in India, potentially setting a benchmark for other states to follow.
