Uttar Pradesh Aims to Become Major Digital and AI Hub with Massive Infrastructure Push
In a significant move to bolster its technological footprint, Uttar Pradesh is strategically positioning itself as a premier digital and artificial intelligence hub. The state government has unveiled ambitious plans to develop eight expansive data centre parks across key urban centers, supported by investment proposals totaling nearly Rs two lakh crore and a dedicated power supply framework of approximately 900 MW, as confirmed by an official spokesperson on Monday.
Strategic Locations and Progress in Development
The proposed data centre parks are slated for construction in Noida, Greater Noida, the Yamuna Expressway region, Ghaziabad, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, and Agra. This initiative is a core component of the state government's strategy to expand digital infrastructure and attract technology-led industries. Officials emphasized that this development will significantly strengthen Uttar Pradesh's role in India's rapidly growing digital economy, establishing a robust base for companies specializing in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and various digital services.
Substantial progress has already been made in the process of land identification and allocation, particularly in Noida, Greater Noida, and the Yamuna Expressway region. In some locations, land has already been formally allotted to companies, while in others, master planning and site identification are actively underway, ensuring a streamlined implementation process.
Major Investment and Corporate Interest
A number of prominent domestic and global firms have expressed strong interest in these projects, underscoring the initiative's appeal. Among the companies that have submitted detailed proposals are HCL Technologies, Adani Group, NTT Data, Yotta Infrastructure, Sterlite Technologies, and Sify Technologies. The government has received proposals amounting to nearly Rs two lakh crore, with memorandums of understanding already signed for several projects and others advancing toward the construction stage.
Power Infrastructure and Sustainability Measures
Recognizing the high energy demands of data centres, the state has meticulously drawn up plans to ensure a reliable power supply of around 900 MW for the sector. This comprehensive approach includes:
- Setting up new substations to enhance electrical capacity.
- Strengthening the existing transmission network to support increased load.
- Providing dedicated electricity supply directly to the data centre parks to ensure uninterrupted operations.
In a forward-thinking move, the government is also actively encouraging the use of renewable energy sources to improve sustainability in data centre operations, aligning with global environmental standards and reducing the carbon footprint of these facilities.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The development of these data centre parks is projected to have a substantial economic impact, generating approximately 50,000 direct jobs. Additionally, a large number of indirect employment opportunities are expected to emerge in supporting sectors such as logistics, maintenance, and services, further boosting the state's economy and providing livelihoods for many residents.
