Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal to save fuel through carpooling, working from home, and virtual meetings, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) in Surat has decided to implement these measures. University Vice-Chancellor Kishorsinh Chavda issued a circular to academic and administrative staff urging them to adopt fuel-saving practices.
Details of the Initiative
Chavda told TOI that over 500 staff members commute to the university campus daily from various parts of Surat. The university has asked them to coordinate and carpool. Additionally, staff have been encouraged to use electric vehicles to further reduce fuel consumption. The administration plans to hold meetings to develop a comprehensive policy on implementing these measures. Online meetings, especially for administrative and guidance purposes, will be prioritized to save both fuel and time.
Scope Beyond the Main Campus
The circular has been sent not only to the VNSGU campus in Surat but also to affiliated colleges in Bharuch, Narmada, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, and Valsad districts. Chavda noted that college officials often travel to Surat for meetings that could be conducted online. With an in-depth plan, such meetings will now be held virtually, saving fuel and time that can be redirected towards student welfare and academic activities.
The university's move aligns with the broader national effort to reduce fuel consumption and promote sustainable practices. By adopting carpooling, electric vehicles, and online meetings, VNSGU aims to set an example for other educational institutions in the region.
