Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) achieved a significant milestone on Thursday by receiving the first trainset for the upcoming Blue Line corridor from Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML). The six-coach, driverless train was transported from BEML's C.V. Raman Nagar facility to the Byappanahalli Metro depot, marking a major step forward for the airport-bound metro project.
Driverless Technology Takes Centre Stage
The new train has been designed for unattended train operations, making it one of Namma Metro's most advanced rolling stock additions. Equipped with modern automation systems, the train is intended for the Blue Line connecting key parts of the city with Kempegowda International Airport. Passenger services will begin only after extensive testing and certification procedures are completed.
Testing Phase Begins at Depot
As the Blue Line depot is still under construction, the train has been stationed at the Byappanahalli depot for preliminary trials. Officials confirmed that the train will undergo depot-based testing and validation procedures over the coming months. The testing process is expected to continue for at least five months before the train can be deployed for commercial operations.
ORR Stretch Eyes 2026 Launch
The 19-kilometer section between Central Silk Board and K.R. Pura is currently targeted for completion by the end of 2026. This elevated corridor runs along the city's busy Outer Ring Road. However, construction of several stations and related infrastructure is still under way, and work continues on multiple fronts to meet the deadline.
Airport Link to Follow Later
The Blue Line is being developed in phases, with the larger corridor extending all the way to Kempegowda International Airport. The remaining stretch beyond K.R. Pura is expected to be completed by December 2027. Once fully operational, the line will significantly improve airport connectivity for Bengaluru's residents and visitors.
BEML to Supply More Trains
BEML was awarded a ₹3,177-crore contract in 2023 to supply 318 metro coaches for the Blue Line project. For the Outer Ring Road section alone, the company is scheduled to deliver 16 trainsets. Thursday's delivery is the first among those planned consignments, with more trains expected to follow in the coming months.
Lessons from Yellow Line Delays
The arrival of the Blue Line train comes against the backdrop of prolonged delays faced by the Yellow Line project. Despite infrastructure being largely ready, passenger operations were held up due to the non-availability of trains. This experience highlighted the critical importance of timely rolling stock delivery for metro projects.
Key Milestone for Airport Metro
With the first train now in Bengaluru Metro's possession, preparations have entered a crucial new phase. While civil construction continues across the corridor, rolling stock testing can begin simultaneously. The development keeps the Blue Line project moving towards its planned opening schedule, bringing the city closer to a modern, driverless metro system.
