National Poetry Festival 2026: Call for Entries

The National Poetry Festival 2026 has officially opened for school students in Classes 9 to 12 across India. Organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the festival aims to nurture young poetic talent and promote literary expression among adolescents.

Students can submit their original poems in any of the 22 scheduled languages recognized by the Indian Constitution, including English. The theme for this year is "Unity in Diversity: Celebrating India's Cultural Heritage." Each participant may submit up to three poems, with a maximum length of 40 lines per poem.

Submission Guidelines and Deadlines

Entries must be submitted online through the official portal by July 31, 2026. According to the official notification, "All entries will be screened by a panel of eminent poets and literary scholars." The shortlisted participants will be invited to the national-level event in New Delhi scheduled for November 2026.

The competition is open to students enrolled in any recognized school board, including CBSE, ICSE, and state boards. Schools are encouraged to facilitate submissions by organizing internal selections.

Prizes and Recognition

Winners will receive cash prizes: first place gets INR 50,000, second place INR 30,000, and third place INR 20,000. Additionally, 10 honorable mentions will receive INR 5,000 each. All winning poems will be published in an anthology by NCERT and featured on the festival's website.

As per the press release, "The festival not only rewards creativity but also provides a platform for young voices to be heard on a national stage." The top 50 entries will be compiled into a digital collection distributed to schools nationwide.

Impact on Students

Participation in the festival offers students an opportunity to enhance their creative writing skills and gain recognition. The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020, which emphasizes holistic development and creative expression. In 2025, the festival received over 15,000 entries, a number expected to rise this year.

Teachers and parents can support students by encouraging them to explore diverse poetic forms, from sonnets to free verse, while adhering to the theme. The festival also includes workshops and mentorship sessions for finalists.
