Kochi: Amid the ongoing redevelopment work at Ernakulam Junction, which has turned the station into a noisy construction zone, a new air-conditioned waiting lounge featuring several passenger amenities has started functioning on the northern end of Platform 1.
“This is in addition to the premium AC lounge that will be opened at the southern end once the ongoing station redevelopment work is complete,” a senior railway official said.
For a fee of Rs 30 per hour, any traveller holding a valid train ticket, including a platform ticket or general second-class ticket, can use the 160-square-foot AC waiting room. Developed on the model of airport lounges, the main AC hall features 100 push-back cushion seats. Travellers can enjoy free high-speed Wi-Fi, air purifiers (even inside the restrooms), a mini library with fresh newspapers, and a giant TV screen. Every single seat comes equipped with a mobile charging point.
For safety and convenience, the lounge includes an in-house cafeteria for refreshments, 24-hour CCTV surveillance, and clear fire exits. Families will find a dedicated, private feeding room for mothers with infants. The attached modern restroom complex features six toilets, including one for disabled people, and four bathrooms. The lounge also has a fire extinguisher. Digital payment facilities are fully supported.
To check in for the first time, you just need to provide your mobile number, ticket, and ID details; on future visits, only your mobile number is required. “We’ve entrusted an agency with the operation of the waiting hall for a period of 10 years,” the official added.
While Ernakulam Town (North) station currently lacks a similar facility, bigger upgrades are on the horizon. A second, even larger premium AC lounge will open on Platform 1 once Ernakulam Junction’s total redevelopment is complete. The station development works suffered a delay and are set to be completed in the first half of 2028.
Furthermore, railways also plans to introduce ‘AC glass cubicles’ on the island platforms at major stations like Ernakulam Town, Aluva, and Thiruvananthapuram Central. These quick-transit spots will even feature ‘Trailer Theatres’, where passengers can relax in premium recliners and watch movie previews while waiting for their trains.
