The Uttar Pradesh government has prepared a plan to operate Metro services across all routes in Kanpur, following the model of other major Indian cities, particularly Delhi. The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has submitted a potential expansion model proposing seven new Metro corridors with a total length of approximately 83.658 kilometers. Notably, one corridor will connect Unnao and Kanpur, running from Unnao to Kanpur via Gumti No. 5 and continuing to Namak Factory Chauraha.
Meeting with Chief Secretary
About ten days ago, during an inter-departmental meeting with the chief secretary in Lucknow, UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar presented the Metro network expansion plan. He stated that the initial report for the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, being prepared by RITES Limited, indicates significant potential for extending the Metro in the city.
Survey and Project Details
This expansion is based on a detailed survey conducted by the UP Metro team over six to seven months. The survey aimed to address growing traffic congestion and provide a modern, environmentally friendly transportation option for the city. The proposed works include approximately 59.648 kilometers of elevated track and 24.01 kilometers of underground track. These corridors are designed to connect major residential, industrial, educational, and commercial areas, offering passengers a quick and convenient travel option.
UPMRC Managing Director said that once the state government grants policy clearance, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared. The Kanpur Development Authority has already finalized the DPR for the Barra-8 to Naubasta stretch, which has been approved by the state government.
In a recent meeting with the government, a presentation was delivered on the utility of the Metro service and the proposed expansion.
