EA Implements Layoffs Across All Battlefield 6 Development Studios
Electronic Arts has executed an undisclosed number of employee layoffs across every studio involved in developing the hit title Battlefield 6. The affected studios include DICE, Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive. This workforce reduction comes just months after the game achieved the distinction of becoming the best-selling title in the United States for the year 2025.
Internal 'Realignment' Follows Historic Launch Success
The job cuts, which were first reported by the gaming publication IGN, are being described internally by EA as a strategic 'realignment'. A company spokesperson confirmed the layoffs impacted all four studios simultaneously but emphasized that each studio will remain operational and continue to support Battlefield 6.
'We've made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community,' the spokesperson stated. 'Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities.'
Record Launch Marred by Player Retention Challenges
The timing of these layoffs is particularly striking given the game's initial commercial triumph. Battlefield 6 launched in October 2025 to what EA hailed as 'the biggest launch in franchise history.' It sold over seven million copies within its first three days, successfully dethroning its long-time rival, Call of Duty.
EA's financial report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2026 highlighted net revenue exceeding $1.9 billion, with Battlefield 6 playing a central role in this performance. However, the game has faced significant difficulties in maintaining its player base post-launch.
On the Steam platform, concurrent player numbers have plummeted from a launch peak of 747,440 to a recent 24-hour high of just 67,080. For comparison, a competing shooter, Arc Raiders, which had a lower initial launch peak, now boasts higher active player counts than Battlefield 6. Additionally, the game's free-to-play battle royale spinoff, Redsec, has received 'Mostly Negative' reviews on Steam.
Layoffs Coincide with Major Acquisition and Leadership Void
These workforce reductions occur during a period of considerable turbulence for Electronic Arts. The company is currently in the process of being acquired for a staggering $55 billion by a consortium of investors. This group includes:
- Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund
- Silver Lake
- Affinity Partners
The acquisition deal is projected to finalize in early 2027. Compounding these corporate changes, the Battlefield franchise suffered a significant leadership loss last December with the tragic death of longtime head Vince Zampella in a car accident, creating a notable void in the team's leadership structure.
Despite these challenges, EA has announced that the next major content update for Battlefield 6 is scheduled for release on March 17, featuring a new map for players.
