Roblox Makes Age Verification Mandatory for Indian Users to Access Chat Features
Roblox Enforces Age Verification for Chat in India

Roblox has officially launched its mandatory age verification system in India. Starting January 14, 2026, all players in the country must complete an age check to access chat features on the popular online gaming platform.

What This Means for Indian Gamers

Roblox, which attracts millions of children and teenagers worldwide, is implementing this measure to enhance user safety. The company claims this makes Roblox the first major online gaming platform in India to require age verification across all user age groups.

How the Age Verification Works

Once players complete the age verification process, they are assigned to one of six specific age categories:

  • Under 9 years
  • 9–12 years
  • 13–15 years
  • 16–17 years
  • 18–20 years
  • 21 years and above

By default, users can interact with players in the age groups immediately above or below their own. For instance, a player aged 9-12 can chat with those under 9 and those between 13 and 15 years old.

Special Rules for Younger Players

The platform has disabled chat features for children under 9 years old. However, these younger users can still access chat if a parent provides consent after the age verification process.

Global Rollout and Technology

Roblox began implementing age verification in a phased manner back in November last year. The initial rollout covered Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands. The company reports that more than 50% of daily active users have already completed the age check in those regions.

Advanced Age Detection Technology

According to reports, Roblox employs sophisticated face scan algorithms for age verification. The company claims these algorithms can predict a user's age within two years of accuracy for individuals between 5 and 25 years old. The system proves most accurate for younger users.

The technology relies on detecting physiological changes that occur during growth and development. Since younger people experience more rapid physical changes, the algorithm achieves higher accuracy for this demographic.

Broader Safety Initiatives

This age verification rollout represents just one part of Roblox's comprehensive safety strategy. In August of last year, the company introduced an open-source version of an artificial intelligence system designed to detect predatory language in chats proactively.

These safety measures follow concerning incidents involving the platform. A lawsuit filed in Iowa, USA, alleged that a 13-year-old girl encountered an adult predator through Roblox, leading to kidnapping, trafficking across multiple states, and assault.

Looking Forward

The implementation of mandatory age verification in India reflects growing concerns about online safety for young gamers. As digital platforms continue to evolve, such protective measures become increasingly important for creating secure virtual environments.

Parents and guardians should remain informed about these safety features and actively participate in their children's online gaming experiences. Roblox's approach demonstrates how technology companies can implement practical solutions to address genuine safety concerns while maintaining platform accessibility.
