Sony Group Shuts Down Acclaimed Bluepoint Games Studio
Sony Group has announced the closure of Bluepoint Games, the Austin-based development studio renowned for its high-quality remakes of classic PlayStation titles. According to a report from Bloomberg, this decision follows what Sony described as a "recent business review" and will result in the layoff of approximately 70 employees. The studio is set to officially shutter in March.
Official Statement from PlayStation
Confirming the shutdown, a PlayStation spokesperson told Bloomberg, "Bluepoint Games is an incredibly talented team and their technical expertise has delivered exceptional experiences for the PlayStation community. We thank them for their passion, creativity, and craftsmanship." This statement highlights the studio's significant contributions while marking the end of its operations under Sony's umbrella.
A Legacy of Exceptional Remakes and Remasters
Founded in 2006, Bluepoint Games built a formidable reputation for delivering critically acclaimed remasters and remakes. The studio's impressive portfolio includes:
- Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection – A remastered compilation of the first three Uncharted games.
- Shadow of the Colossus (2018 remake) – A complete visual overhaul of the beloved classic.
- Demon's Souls (2020 remake) – The studio's most celebrated project, which launched alongside the PlayStation 5.
Sony acquired Bluepoint Games in 2021, shortly after the success of the Demon's Souls remake. The company later tasked the studio with co-developing God of War: Ragnarok in 2022, further solidifying its role within PlayStation's first-party ecosystem.
What Led to the Sudden Closure?
After the release of Ragnarok, Bluepoint began working on the development of a live-service God of War game. Unfortunately, this project was canceled in January 2025. At that time, PlayStation indicated it was collaborating with Bluepoint to determine the studio's next assignment. Instead of moving forward with a new project, Sony has now decided to shut down the studio entirely, marking an abrupt end to one of PlayStation's most respected subsidiaries.
Potential Impact on Future PlayStation Consoles
In related gaming industry news, a separate report suggests that the launch of next-generation consoles, including the PlayStation 6 (PS6), may face delays. According to Insider Gaming, RAM shortages are a primary concern, with prices having increased by several hundred percent in recent months due to soaring demand from the artificial intelligence sector.
The report states that RAM availability could continue to be a bottleneck, potentially driving up costs. "It leaves console producers in a very tricky spot moving forward," the report explains, adding that while consoles have traditionally been subsidized, RAM shortages and price hikes could make next-generation consoles "extortionate" compared to previous generations.
This development adds another layer of complexity to Sony's strategic decisions, as the company navigates both studio management and hardware production challenges in a rapidly evolving market.
