Tree Felling Begins for Cycle Track Project
The Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has commenced the cutting of trees near Raipur Khurd village to facilitate the construction of a cycle track. According to officials, the track will be built along the Dakshin Marg stretch, extending from the Zirakpur border to Tribune Chowk. A total of 68 trees are slated to be axed for this project.
Official Confirmation and Details
UT Chief Engineer CB Ojha confirmed that a 4.5-kilometer cycle track will be constructed on each side of the road. He stated that all necessary formalities for the tree felling have been completed. In compensation for the removed trees, additional trees are being planted, though the exact number was not specified.
Impact and Environmental Considerations
The tree removal has raised environmental concerns among residents, but the corporation asserts that the project will promote sustainable transportation. The cycle track is part of a broader urban development initiative to encourage cycling and reduce vehicular emissions. The project aligns with the city's goals for green mobility, despite the immediate loss of greenery.
