IIAS Shimla Hosts Art Camp to Revive Kangra Miniatures and Chamba Rumal
IIAS Shimla Art Camp Revives Kangra Miniatures and Chamba Rumal

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), housed in the historic Viceregal Lodge in Shimla (now Rashtrapati Niwas), is set to revive centuries-old artistic traditions. From June 15 to 19, the institute will host an art camp titled 'Folk and Rural Imagery in Kangra Miniatures: An Indigenous Indian Art Perspective'. This event aims to showcase the vibrant colors, stories, and rhythms of Himalayan village life through 18th-century Kangra miniature paintings and Chamba Rumal embroidery.

Focus on Everyday Life

While Kangra miniatures are famous for depicting mythology and devotion, especially the love stories of Lord Krishna and Radha, this camp explores a lesser-known theme: the daily life of Himalayan villages. Six eminent Kangra miniature painters and two master practitioners of Chamba Rumal will conduct live demonstrations. Scholars, tourists, and locals will witness the intricate creative process, transforming the IIAS campus into a living workshop where heritage is experienced, not just displayed.

Inspired by Tagore's Vision

The art camp is inspired by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore's vision of connecting art with rural communities and cultural memory. It seeks to foster dialogue between artists, scholars, and visitors. IIAS director Professor Himanshu Kumar Chaturvedi has been instrumental in creating the 'Tagore Gallery' at IIAS, inaugurated on March 6. The gallery features rare archival records, photographs, and curated exhibits tracing Tagore's journey, highlighting his literary brilliance, philosophical depth, and vision of a world united through culture.

Gallery Inauguration and Legacy

The art camp will culminate on June 19 with the inauguration of a specially curated gallery by Himachal Pradesh Governor Kavinder Gupta. Artworks produced during the camp will become part of the institute's permanent collection, serving as a resource for researchers, art enthusiasts, and future generations.
