IIT Kanpur's Technopark@IITK to Launch India's Largest UAS Testing Facility
In a significant development for India's defence and aerospace sector, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur's research and technology park foundation, Technopark@IITK, is poised to commence testing of various equipment and tools destined for defence products. This state-of-the-art facility, developed with an investment exceeding Rs 50 crore, is set to become the country's largest center for conducting trials on diverse unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
Advanced Testing Capabilities and Standards
The facility will feature a virtual testing environment and automated system-level testing, meticulously designed to adhere to standards that meet the rigorous requirements of the US military. This alignment with international benchmarks is expected to enhance the credibility and global competitiveness of Indian defence manufacturing.
Currently, private companies and individuals can avail themselves of 18 distinct types of tests essential for building drones and unmanned aerial systems. These include:
- Humidity test
- Thermal shock test
- Rain test
- Power supply variation test
- Navigation and communication test
- Destruction capability test
- Wide-range scanning field
Dr. Abhishek from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, who also serves as the director of the UAS Testing Foundation—the company established to conduct tests for private manufacturers—highlighted the facility's unique offerings. "The Kanpur facility is the only one in India that provides EMI/EMC (electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility) testing for aerial systems, a windwall testing environment, motion-capturing technology, and a 1-kilometre-long runway," he stated. "We are also in the process of securing certifications from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories in the coming weeks to further enhance our capabilities."
Boosting the UP Defence Industrial Corridor
This latest initiative is anticipated to generate positive sentiments among companies interested in establishing manufacturing units within the Uttar Pradesh (UP) defence industrial corridor. This project, executed with the support of the defence ministry in UP and Tamil Nadu, aims to reduce India's dependency on foreign defence and aerospace equipment and technology.
Work on setting up the facility within the premier research institute began four years ago, shortly after the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA)—the nodal agency responsible for executing the defence corridor project—partnered with IIT Kanpur.
Sri Hari Pratap Shahi, Additional Chief Executive Officer of UPEIDA and also a director of the same company, emphasized the facility's potential impact. "The Kanpur facility is expected to encourage private manufacturers to set up operations in UP. We have already initiated the development of land parcels at six locations situated near expressways. The facility has recently gone live, and we have informed stakeholders about the range of tests that can be conducted," he explained.
This development marks a pivotal step in strengthening India's indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities, fostering innovation, and supporting the strategic goals of the UP defence industrial corridor.
