Hydrogen Train Set to Launch on Jind-Sonepat Section

India's first hydrogen fuel cell-based train is expected to begin operations on the Jind–Sonepat section of Northern Railway. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the train during a function in Jind on July 17, according to Haryana Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi. The train has already completed trial runs on the dedicated route.

Project Overview and Significance

Indian Railways has approved a 10-coach hydrogen fuel cell train for the Jind–Sonepat route. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the project is a major step toward green transportation. The hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, emitting only water vapor. India joins Germany, Japan, China, and the United States in exploring hydrogen-powered rail. This initiative supports India's clean energy and net-zero carbon emission goals.

Key Features of the Hydrogen Train

The train comprises 10 coaches and operates at a maximum speed of 75 kmph. It is powered by a 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. During the initial phase, trained technical staff will accompany the train to ensure smooth operation. The project includes 24x7 monitoring of the hydrogen refueling system and deployment of certified personnel for critical operations.

Infrastructure Developed at Jind Junction

An indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility has been set up at Jind Junction. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has granted the required license for storage and dispensing of compressed hydrogen gas. A hydrogen compression system with standby compressors has been installed. Round-the-clock hydrogen leakage detectors, flame detectors, and other safety systems are in place. Approved operation and maintenance manuals and standard operating procedures have been established.

Current Status and Launch Timeline

Northern Railway General Manager Rajesh Kumar Pandey stated that the train will be launched after completing trials. The run-through trial on the Jind–Sonepat section has already been carried out. Haryana Minister Krishan Kumar Bedi confirmed that PM Modi is expected to flag off the train on July 17. He added that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will visit Jind soon to review preparations.
