Karnataka Pioneers India's First Quantum Ecosystem Map and Launches Ambitious Roadmap

In a landmark move for India's technological advancement, Karnataka has officially unveiled the nation's first Quantum Ecosystem Map and formally initiated Phase-1 of its comprehensive quantum technology roadmap. This coordinated push aims to systematically organize and scale activity within the burgeoning quantum sector, positioning the state at the forefront of this cutting-edge field.

World Quantum Day Announcement and Strategic Vision

At a special event commemorating World Quantum Day, Karnataka's Science and Technology Minister, NS Boseraju, detailed the state's ambitious plans. The newly released Quantum Ecosystem Map, meticulously prepared by the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, provides a comprehensive and detailed snapshot of Karnataka's existing capabilities. This includes an extensive overview of research institutions, innovative startups, and established industry players actively engaged in quantum technologies.

Minister Boseraju emphasized that this mapping exercise is a critical strategic tool designed to identify the state's core strengths and pinpoint existing gaps within the ecosystem. The ultimate objective is to enable a significantly faster translation of foundational quantum research into practical, real-world applications and commercial products. According to the state's Department of Science and Technology, this mapping effort represents the crucial first step in a much broader, structured plan to realize Karnataka's quantum ambitions. This initiative comes at a pivotal time when nations worldwide are making substantial investments in computing, communication, and sensing technologies based on the principles of quantum science.

The Q-City Hub and Leadership Appointment

A central and visionary element of Karnataka's quantum roadmap is the proposed "Q-City." This dedicated hub is designed to function as a collaborative platform, bringing together academia, ambitious startups, and established industry leaders under one roof. The government stated that the Q-City project aims to act as a single-window ecosystem to robustly support collaboration, rigorous testing, and the successful commercialization of quantum technologies.

Minister Boseraju announced that a detailed project report for the Q-City will be initiated shortly. This crucial planning phase will be overseen by the state's newly formed Quantum Task Force. In a significant appointment, the minister revealed that IISc professor Arindam Ghosh has been named the Chairman of this task force. Professor Ghosh and the task force will be responsible for guiding the implementation of the roadmap and ensuring the time-bound execution of all associated projects.

Financial Commitments and Broader Deep-Tech Strategy

To fuel this quantum leap, the Karnataka government has announced an initial grant of Rs 10 crore. This funding is specifically earmarked to support skilling initiatives, advanced research projects, and the growth of startups operating in the quantum technology domain. The department's focus will be on building a strong, sustainable talent pipeline while simultaneously strengthening the state's existing research infrastructure.

Karnataka's IT & BT Minister, Priyank Kharge, highlighted that this quantum initiative perfectly aligns with the state's broader, aggressive push into deep-tech sectors. He pointed to the existence of a substantial Rs 400 crore fund aimed at supporting emerging technologies and noted that existing startup programs have already succeeded in attracting significant private investment.

"We have officially declared the upcoming decade as the ‘Deep Tech Decade', backing this vision with a dedicated Rs 400 crore fund," Minister Kharge stated. "By providing equity-free grants of up to Rs 50 lakh to more than 1,300 startups, we actively catalysed the venture capital community to disburse a record Rs 732 crore in a single day."

The government also outlined plans to expand innovation activity beyond Bengaluru through wider state-level investments. This strategy intends to leverage Karnataka's existing, formidable base of world-class research institutions and over 1,000 global capability centers. As Minister Kharge noted, "While Bengaluru proudly reigns as the world's fourth-largest tech cluster... we're now rapidly expanding this growth. Through our local economic acceleration programme (Leap) and a massive Rs 1,000 crore investment, we are taking this unmatched innovation ecosystem to cities across the entire state."

This comprehensive launch marks Karnataka as the first Indian state to map its entire quantum ecosystem, setting a new benchmark for coordinated technological development and public-private partnership in the country's quest for quantum supremacy.
