MP Birla Planetarium Honors Astrophysicist Yashwant Gupta with Prestigious Memorial Award

The MP Birla Planetarium in Kolkata celebrated a momentous occasion on Friday as it presented the esteemed MP Birla Memorial Award to Dr. Yashwant Gupta, the distinguished director of the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics at TIFR in Pune. This biennial recognition, held after a six-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic, highlights exceptional contributions to the field of astronomy and astrophysics.

A Poetic Full Circle: From Childhood Inspiration to Honored Scientist

In an emotionally charged acceptance speech, Dr. Gupta reflected on the profound impact of a visit to the Birla Planetarium during his high school years in the 1970s. "That experience opened my eyes to the wonders of the universe, ignited a lifelong passion for the cosmos, and planted the seeds of curiosity that have guided my entire journey," he recounted. He described the award as deeply moving and poetic, standing on a stage named after the visionary who made such transformative institutions possible.

"I accept this award not just for myself, but for all who gaze upward and dream," Gupta emphasized. He expressed hope that this moment, inspired by MP Birla's legacy, would motivate the next generation of young minds in the auditorium to become the leading scientists of tomorrow.

Overcoming Logistical Hurdles: A Delayed but Deserved Ceremony

The award function, initially scheduled three months prior, faced significant disruption when Dr. Gupta was unable to travel to Kolkata due to the widespread operational meltdown of IndiGo Airlines. His flight from Pune was among approximately 5,000 cancellations, and attempts to secure an alternative booking proved futile, necessitating the postponement.

Instituted in 1993, the MP Birla Memorial Award has a rich history of honoring luminaries in science. The last recipient was Professor Thanu Padmanabhan in 2019. Past awardees include renowned figures such as:

  • Jayant Vishnu Narlikar
  • Govind Swarup
  • K. Kasturirangan
  • APJ Abdul Kalam

The award was not presented in 2015 and 2017 due to extensive renovation work at the planetarium, underscoring the significance of this year's resumption.

Celebrating a Legacy of Scientific Excellence and Inspiration

SK Daga, honorary secretary of the MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, praised Dr. Gupta's work, stating, "Prof Gupta's dedication to advancing our understanding of the universe truly embodies the spirit of the MP Birla Memorial Award." He highlighted how Gupta's research has not only opened new avenues for scientific inquiry but also provided solutions that benefit the broader advancement of human knowledge.

Echoing this sentiment, MP Birla Planetarium curator S. Datta added, "His research has not only opened new avenues for scientific inquiry but has also provided solutions that will benefit the advancement of human knowledge. We are thrilled to present him with this well-deserved recognition." The ceremony served as a testament to the enduring power of curiosity and the importance of nurturing scientific talent from a young age.
