CSIR-NEERI Director Urges Scientists to Prioritize Global Research Excellence

In a significant address at the CSIR-National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) in Nagpur, Director General Dr N Kalaiselvi called for a sharper global focus in scientific research. Speaking during the institute's 68th Foundation Day celebrations on April 8, she urged scientists to prioritize at least two long-term, globally competitive technologies. This strategic move aims to position NEERI as a benchmark institution and a National Centre of Excellence in environmental engineering.

Reviving Legacy Through Impactful Science

Dr Kalaiselvi emphasized the need to revive NEERI's legacy by enhancing research excellence and societal impact. She highlighted the successful remediation of the mercury-contaminated site at Kodaikanal as a ‘matter of national pride’ and a model for impactful science. To build on this success, she urged scientists to actively submit research proposals, mentor at least three students each, and generate meaningful success stories that demonstrate real-world applications.

Addressing Research Gaps and Boosting Impact

While acknowledging NEERI's efforts in addressing societal challenges, Dr Kalaiselvi pointed out critical gaps. She stated that the institute's research impact must ideally increase threefold to meet global standards. Key recommendations included:

  • Accreditation of all research and development facilities to ensure quality and reliability.
  • Expansion of accredited laboratories to enhance testing and validation capabilities.
  • Formation of collaborative consortia with other institutions to boost visibility and research outcomes.

She also appreciated NEERI's testbed facility but stressed the importance of developing sustainable business models to support long-term innovation.

Focus on Soil Health and Net Zero Goals

Dr Kalaiselvi underlined the importance of focused research on soil health, calling for NEERI to take a leadership role in this area. Furthermore, she urged the institute to contribute significantly to India's ‘Net Zero 2070’ goals through science-driven interventions. This includes developing technologies and strategies for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) to mitigate climate change impacts.

NEERI's Historical Contributions and Future Vision

Earlier in the event, NEERI Director Dr S Venkata Mohan highlighted the institute's role as a national referral laboratory for nearly seven decades. He noted NEERI's growing international recognition and its success in translating scientific research into policy and practical solutions. Dr Mohan emphasized the institute's commitment to delivering sustainable environmental solutions and supporting key policy initiatives.

Inauguration of New Facilities and Publications

On the occasion, Dr Kalaiselvi inaugurated several state-of-the-art facilities, including:

  1. A Living Lab for real-time environmental monitoring and experimentation.
  2. A Bamboo Bio-Germplasm Conservation Garden to preserve genetic diversity.
  3. An enhanced Testbed Facility for pilot-scale testing of technologies.
  4. A Bio-CCUS Innovation Hub focused on carbon capture and utilization.
  5. A Student Research & Innovation Expo to showcase young talent.

She also released key publications, such as the Environment Sustainability and Governance Report, Water Technology Compendium, Circular Economy Report on Solid Waste, and NEERI's technology compendium and newsletter. These resources aim to disseminate knowledge and promote best practices in environmental management.

This Foundation Day event marks a pivotal moment for CSIR-NEERI, as it sets a clear path toward global research excellence and impactful science in alignment with national priorities like Net Zero 2070.
