Rare Mercury-Venus-Moon-Saturn Alignment in Goa on Feb 19

Rare Celestial Spectacle to Grace Goa's Skies on February 19

Skygazers across Goa are eagerly anticipating a breathtaking astronomical event on February 19, when Mercury reaches its greatest eastern elongation. This rare occurrence offers one of the best opportunities to observe the elusive planet, which will shine brightly just above the sunset point, making it visible to the naked eye.

What Makes This Event So Special?

The event occurs when Mercury is at its farthest point from the Sun in the evening sky, creating optimal viewing conditions. On this day, Mercury will be positioned at its highest point in the sky, glowing with a dazzling orange hue at magnitude 0.3 around 6:39 PM, very low in the west. While Mercury is often difficult to spot due to its proximity to the Sun, this alignment makes it the brightest and most prominent it has been in some time.

Satish Nayak, president of the Association of Friends of Astronomy in Goa, explained to TOI, "The dazzling orange Mercury is clearly available to observe slightly above the sunset point at magnitude 0.3, around 6.39 pm, very low in the west on the day it reaches its highest point in the sky."

A Stunning Planetary Lineup

Adding to the spectacle, this rare alignment will feature a stunning lineup of celestial bodies:

  • Mercury shining brightly above the sunset point.
  • Venus visible just below Mercury.
  • The crescent Moon and Saturn appearing above, creating a vertical arrangement in the twilight sky.

Nayak emphasized the uniqueness of this event, stating, "This greatest eastern elongation day is considered the best time to see Mercury, best observed on the beaches of Goa. This year, the phenomenon will be special as Venus will be visible just below Mercury, and the crescent Moon and Saturn are visible just above, making for a spectacular combo in the sky."

Why This Event Is a Must-See for Astronomers

Mercury's greatest eastern elongation is a rare event, occurring only a few times each year, making it a special occasion for both amateur and professional astronomers. The combination of multiple planets and the Moon in such a clear, visible alignment is expected to draw significant interest from the stargazing community.

Observers are advised to head to open areas, such as Goa's beaches, for the best viewing experience, as the low western horizon will provide an unobstructed view of this celestial marvel. This event not only highlights the beauty of our solar system but also offers a rare chance to witness Mercury in all its glory, often hidden by the Sun's glare.
