Vijayawada Traffic Police to Deploy ASTraM App for Smart Signals

Vijayawada: In a significant move to alleviate traffic congestion and embrace smart mobility solutions, the city traffic police are preparing to deploy the Actionable Intelligence for Sustainable Traffic Management (ASTraM) application to operate traffic signals. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow through technology-driven approaches.

ASTraM App and Data Sources

Currently, the ASTraM app analyzes congestion using three data sources, including satellite inputs and Google platforms. Officials are now exploring its integration with an Adaptive Traffic Signal Management System (ATSM) to dynamically regulate signals based on real-time conditions.

Successful Trials at Mahanadu Junction

As part of the implementation plan, trials were conducted at Mahanadu Junction on NH-16 over several days. Traffic was regulated using the ASTraM-based ATSM system, which reportedly achieved nearly 80% efficiency during testing, demonstrating the potential of this technology.

Cost-Effective Implementation

The city has approximately 53 traffic junctions. Installing advanced cameras, controllers, and network infrastructure at each location would cost an estimated ₹3–4 crore. To reduce expenses, authorities are considering using satellite and Google Maps data instead of camera-based systems, making the project more financially viable.

Real-Time Adaptive Signal Control

Once implemented, the system will adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic density. A police official attached to the city command control center explained: “Green and red lights, along with timer operations, would function according to traffic conditions. The system will be centrally monitored and operated through the Command Control Center. We believe the technology could significantly reduce congestion and improve traffic management efficiency across the city.”

This initiative marks a step forward in Vijayawada's efforts to modernize its urban infrastructure and provide smoother commutes for residents.
