Land Rover Introduces 2026 Defender with Vertex Variant
Land Rover has officially unveiled the 2026 Defender, featuring a new Vertex variant, an integrated AI voice assistant, and an optional six-seat interior configuration. The updated model builds on the Defender's legacy of off-road prowess while adding advanced technology and luxury touches to appeal to a broader audience.
Vertex Variant: A New Trim Level
The Vertex trim sits above the existing HSE and below the top-spec V8, offering unique styling elements such as a black contrast roof, exclusive 22-inch wheels, and a distinctive grille. Inside, the Vertex gets perforated leather seats with contrast stitching, a premium Meridian sound system, and ambient lighting. According to Land Rover, the Vertex is designed for customers who want a bold, modern look without compromising off-road capability.
AI Assistant for Enhanced Connectivity
For the first time, the Defender comes with a built-in AI voice assistant, powered by Amazon Alexa and Land Rover's own natural language processing. The assistant can control navigation, climate, media, and vehicle settings, and can answer queries about vehicle status. Land Rover claims the system learns driver preferences over time, making suggestions for routes, music, and comfort settings.
Six-Seat Layout: More Flexibility
In a first for the Defender, the 2026 model offers an optional six-seat layout with three individual seats in the second row. This configuration, available on the 110 and 130 body styles, allows for easier access to the third row and provides more passenger space. The second-row seats can be folded flat to create a large cargo area. Land Rover says the six-seat option is ideal for families and adventure groups needing extra seating without sacrificing storage.
Powertrain and Off-Road Capability
The 2026 Defender continues with a range of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The Vertex variant is available with the P400 mild-hybrid straight-six petrol engine, producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Land Rover has also upgraded the Terrain Response system with new algorithms for better traction on sand, mud, and rock. The Defender retains its signature approach, breakover, and departure angles, along with up to 900mm wading depth.
Pricing and Availability
Land Rover has confirmed that the 2026 Defender will go on sale in late 2025, with deliveries beginning in early 2026. Pricing for the Vertex variant starts at $85,000 in the US market, with the six-seat layout adding an extra $1,500. The company expects the updated model to strengthen Defender's position in the luxury off-road segment, competing with models like the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and Jeep Wrangler.
According to Land Rover's CEO, "The Defender has always been about capability and character. With the Vertex variant and new AI assistant, we are bringing modern luxury and intelligence to the world's most iconic off-roader."
