India's Smartphone Market Undergoes Sharp Price Reshuffle Amid Rising Costs

New Delhi: India's smartphone market is experiencing a significant price reshuffle, driven by escalating component costs that are pushing devices into higher price brackets and severely squeezing the entry-level segment. This trend is reshaping consumer choices and market dynamics across the country.

Widespread Price Increases and Future Projections

As of March 2026, more than 80 out of approximately 200 smartphone models, including memory variants, have seen price increases, with an average hike of about 15%. Further increases are anticipated, with prices likely to rise another 15% in the second quarter of 2026. In some cases, new smartphone launches could come in 30-40% higher than previous models, indicating a sustained upward pressure on pricing.

Impact on Entry-Level Segment

According to Counterpoint Research, the sub-Rs 15,000 category has been the hardest hit. Its market share dropped to 33% in the first quarter of 2026 from 41% in the third quarter of 2025. Tarun Pathak, research director of devices and ecosystems at Counterpoint Research, explained, "Brands in this segment, typically operating on razor-thin margins, have struggled to absorb input cost increases." As a result, many devices have been repriced upward, effectively pushing them out of the budget bracket.

Growth in Mid-Range Segment

In contrast, the Rs 15,000-30,000 segment has expanded significantly, with its share rising from 35% to 45% over the same period. Price hikes have driven several models from the budget category into this mid-range bracket, reflecting a shift in consumer purchasing patterns. Pathak added, "Memory price inflation is impacting the entry-tier segment, where brands have limited flexibility to absorb costs."

Key Factors Driving the Price Reshuffle

  • Rising component costs, particularly for memory and other essential parts.
  • Brands' inability to maintain low margins in the entry-level segment.
  • Market adjustments leading to a redistribution of smartphone models across price categories.
  • Consumer behavior adapting to higher price points in the mid-range segment.

This price reshuffle highlights the challenges faced by manufacturers and consumers alike, as affordability becomes a growing concern in India's competitive smartphone landscape.
