Indore EV Fire Tragedy Sparks Widespread Safety Concerns and Government Action
The devastating fire in Indore's Brijeshwari annexe that claimed eight lives early Wednesday has sent a powerful wave of anxiety through the local community, prompting electric vehicle (EV) owners across the city to urgently re-evaluate their own charging habits and safety protocols.
Official Probe Points to Charging Point Explosion
While the official investigation into the Pugalia family tragedy points to a charging point explosion and subsequent blasts as the likely cause, neighbours and fellow EV users are now strongly emphasising the critical importance of 'proper use' of technology to prevent future catastrophic mishaps.
Local EV Users Share Their Safety Practices and Concerns
Nikhil Joshi, a college student who relies entirely on an electric bike for his daily commute, believes that the charging infrastructure—not necessarily the vehicle itself—is often the primary culprit in such incidents. "I use a bike with an automatic power-cut feature that stops charging once the battery is full. Still, I am very disciplined about monitoring exactly how many hours it stays plugged in," Joshi explained.
After observing the tragic site, he noted that the electric car involved appeared to be connected to a standard power switch. "If you draw high power from a low-capacity plug, the switch can dangerously overheat and catch fire before the battery even reacts. It's absolutely about following the user manual to the letter and understanding your equipment's limits."
For Shourya, a young resident of the same locality who also rides an electric scooter daily, the news hit painfully close to home. He follows a strict charging regimen to maintain both battery health and personal safety. "I've always heard and read that an EV battery should ideally be maintained between 5% and 90% charge to prolong its life and reduce risks, and I follow that guideline strictly without exception," Shourya stated.
He recalled a friend's scooter catching fire years ago, which investigators attributed to leaving the vehicle under the scorching sun for extended periods. "After this heartbreaking incident with the Pugalia family, I'm going to be extra cautious. You simply cannot take these safety matters for granted anymore."
Long-Term Users Remain Confident with Proper Handling
Despite the widespread panic, some long-term EV users remain confident about the technology—provided it is handled correctly with proper precautions. Rakesh Batham, who lives just metres away from the incident site, owns two e-rickshaws that he depends on for livelihood.
"I operate one vehicle personally and rent out the other. We charge both at home on a domestic line every single day and have never experienced a single spark or short-circuit issue in years of use," Batham reported. However, he admitted that the sheer scale and tragedy of the Brijeshwari annexe fire has forced him to meticulously double-check his entire charging setup. "We are naturally panicked. Even though we've had no issues historically, we will now ensure we meet every single required safety parameter for charging without compromise."
Government Announces Immediate Safety Measures
The tragic incident has not only deeply affected local sentiment but has also moved the state government to announce immediate regulatory action. Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, who visited the spot personally, stated that a committee of technical experts would thoroughly investigate the fire's causes.
"This is not only a very tragic event but an alarming incident for public safety. An electric vehicle charging point catching fire is a serious matter of concern that requires systematic address. A comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) must be prepared and implemented for EV charging across residential areas," the minister declared.
The government will now formally frame and enforce detailed SOPs for EV charging in residential areas to ensure that all high-voltage charging points meet specific, rigorous safety standards. This proactive measure aims to prevent similar tragedies and restore public confidence in electric mobility technology.
