Fuel Prices Surge Amid Geopolitical Tensions
In a significant move, oil marketing companies hiked the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 3 per litre on Tuesday, October 22, 2024. This increase comes amidst escalating tensions in West Asia, which have driven up global crude oil prices. The revised rates are effective from 6 a.m. today.
Impact on Metro Cities
As a result of the price revision, the cost of petrol and diesel has risen across major metropolitan areas. In Delhi, petrol now costs Rs 96.72 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 89.62 per litre. In Mumbai, petrol is retailing at Rs 106.31 per litre, and diesel at Rs 94.27 per litre. Chennai residents are paying Rs 102.63 for a litre of petrol and Rs 91.34 for diesel. In Kolkata, petrol is priced at Rs 106.03 per litre, and diesel at Rs 92.76 per litre. Bengaluru sees petrol at Rs 102.86 per litre and diesel at Rs 89.66 per litre.
Reasons Behind the Hike
The primary factor behind the price increase is the surge in international crude oil prices, which have been volatile due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The region's instability has raised concerns about oil supply disruptions, leading to higher prices. Additionally, the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar has made imports more expensive, further contributing to the hike.
Government and Industry Reactions
The government has not yet commented on the price hike, but industry experts suggest that further increases may be on the horizon if crude oil prices continue to rise. Consumers are likely to feel the pinch as transportation costs increase, potentially leading to higher prices for essential goods. The opposition parties have criticized the move, calling for a reduction in excise duty to ease the burden on the common man.
What Lies Ahead
Analysts predict that fuel prices may remain elevated in the near term, depending on the geopolitical situation. The government may consider measures such as cutting excise duties or negotiating with oil-producing nations to stabilize prices. Meanwhile, consumers are advised to plan their fuel purchases accordingly and explore alternative modes of transport where possible.
