Forest officials in Berhampur arrested 11 fishermen on Monday for illegally entering the restricted Nalaban area, a wildlife sanctuary situated within Chilika Lake. The arrests were made during a routine patrol conducted by the staff of the Chilika range. The fishermen were found in two groups operating mechanized boats within the sanctuary, which is strictly off-limits to unauthorized personnel.
Seizure of Equipment and Boats
During the operation, authorities confiscated a range of equipment from the fishermen. The seized items included two mechanized boats, two motor engines, 13 super dubinets (a type of fishing net), two bamboo oars, and two thermocol boxes. These materials were used by the fishermen for their illegal activities within the protected area.
Details of the Patrol Operation
The patrol team from the Chilika range was conducting regular surveillance in the lake when they spotted the two groups of fishermen. The individuals had unlawfully entered the Nalaban sanctuary zone, which is designated as a protected area for wildlife conservation. The forest officials acted promptly to apprehend the suspects and prevent further intrusion.
Legal Consequences and Conservation Efforts
The arrested fishermen are now facing legal action for violating wildlife protection laws. The Nalaban sanctuary is a critical habitat for numerous bird species and other aquatic life, and such illegal entries pose a threat to the ecological balance of the region. Forest officials have reiterated the importance of adhering to sanctuary regulations and have vowed to intensify patrolling to deter future violations.
